POTD #17 - Indulging in Blue & White

Ever since Diwali, I'm obsessed with the blue and white combo. It brings a fresh perspective to ethnic wear, and goes well on western wear and semi-formals too.

Wedding Wear Trendpick from Diwali

It's been over a week now, but I'm still not over the festival of sparkle, fairy lights and fashion. Diwali left us with some cool trends we could now use to stand out during the wedding season.

Trend #1: Blue and White + Silver

Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
We've seen it on toile de jouy fabric, and willow patterned and wedgewood china crockery. And don't we just love the striking contrast between the two colors? This wedding season, add in chunky silver jewellery from your granny's closet and go desi chic with the blue and white trend.

Style tip- With the shade of blue, don't stick to the standard ;)

Trend #2: Spicy Red
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Red is bold. Red is beautiful. Whatever you wear for your yaar ki shaadi, don't forget to glam up with a dash of red!

Style tip- The norm is to paint your lips bold, but try on the color on accessories for a change. ;)

Trend #3: Simmer in Shimmer

Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Diwali has always been the festival of all things sparkly and blingy. Big fat Indian weddings are not far behind, and to add to it the current season. It's the perfect time to go get your shimmery clothes, shoes and accessories out from the closet.

Style tip- Don't go too loud on shimmer just yet. Combine your colored solids with little shimmery pieces in gold, silver or pastels. :)

Trend #4: Go Royal
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakka
But don't go overboard. Make your look elegant and rich-looking, but definitely not over-the-top. In fact, if you want to do royal right, think minimalistic but classy, with statement pieces. Go in for polkis, kundan or even pearls to really nail it.

Style tip- Let your jewellery do the talking. Opt for a plain saree with a broad border, a statement ring and earrings, and you're good to go! :)

Trend #5: Ditch the Dupatta
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
I'm all in for a no-fuss look, especially at weddings. Here's a little inspiration for a dupatta-less ensemble.

Style tip- An embroidered shrug/bolero. A shimmery crop top. A lehenga. And that's how you do drop dread gorgeous! ;)

That's all for now. Until next time!

POTD #16 - Ease up!

Hello again,

The last few days have been like a furnace outside and I'm sure none of us are going to be sporting any synthetics until nature sprinkles some winter charm on us. Until then, we're going to stay comfortable in our easy breezy cottons and voiles, which are bang on! But, whites and lemons? They're so passé, and have got me looking for some colourspiration. Here's what I found-
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Tunic and Pants: Cottonworld
Shoes: Crocs

I love, love, love the green and navy combination. This one's perfect for that extra bit of zing to work wear.

Style tip- Love to layer? Throw in an off white crochet shrug and a charmed bracelet to fancify your look.

So, how would you beat the heat? Do share your style, would love to see!

Until next time,

In as Blogger. Out as Shopper.

Hey all,

Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Been a while since I've posted anything on the blog. Anyway, here's an update from sometime last week. Quite a perky day, this one was! Woke up early, soaked in the soothing aura of dawn, a great workout session, work was smooth as well, and a lot of other things. During my lunch hour, I managed a quick trip to High Street Phoenix to check out the A/W 14 collection at the Wills Lifestyle store. It’s always amazing to have such colourful days, you know!

Talking of the collection launch at Wills Lifestyle, it was the perfect thing to go for during a break from work. It included a fun activity...something we fashion communicators love doing – styling! I was browsing through pieces to put together a ‘Look of the Season', when I came across this really pretty, almost dreamy knit. Oh, it was love at first sight! I knew it just HAD TO BE part of the look. Teamed it up with trousers, a shirt from the men's section, and a belt and bag to go!

Gear up for the weekend by going a little easy on formals. This is perfect Friday wear. Rolled up sleeves really ease up the look and the belt is worn over the shirt to simply add to the silhouette. The only little trick to nail this look is to maintain a common tone with the top and bottom (and your bag and accessories), and let the shirt be another colour. The belt and shoes should ideally match, but it's really up to you...experiment a bit if you feel like. :)

Model is wearing-

Shirt from the men's collection at Wills Lifestyle
Knitted top from the Wills Clublife Poem collection

Trousers, belt and bag from Wills Lifestyle
Watch and shoes- Model's own

By the time I put the look together, I was too emotionally attached to the top and couldn't let go. Et voila, I bought it! Come winter and I'll be seen wearing this one...maybe every second day! *so in love* I also loved the new additions to their formal wear colour palette and the fluid fabrics from the Wills Sport collection. Oh, and certain pieces from Wills clublife, you'd be stupid to not buy! What are you waiting for? Go, shop! ;)

Until next time!

Lakmé Fashion Week 2014

Hey all,

The much awaited, Lakmé Fashion Week, is finally here! Aren't we excited? And why not? This time, it's going to be different- big, bold and mad.

I'm really looking forward to svelte models drenched in art, gliding towards the flashing lights at the other end of the ramp. Aarti Vijay Gupta brings this very experience to life with her S/R '14 collection that is inspired by the pre-vedic "Indian Miniature Paintings" and boasts of beautiful, elegant cuts.

Another collection I'm looking forward to is a blend of bold and playful. Kolkata-based Sayantan Sarkar is doing a mix of georgette, chiffon and linen. The splash of colour really kicks in the mood, prepping us up for Holi, and then, summer!

The designers will showcase their collections on 13th and 14th March 2014 respectively.

For the entire schedule, click here.
Until next time!

POTD # 14 - Dancing Around Pink

Hey all,

This idea came to me while I was wondering what nail art to pick for the week. I just decided to go through my nail colour collection and take a call accordingly. I felt like pink, but not too much. So I decided to paint a nail in a particular shade of pink and the rest in similar tones of brown and lilac. Here's how it turned out-
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
So set a trend, playing with different tones around a particular shade of colour, or opt for monotone, going from lightest shade on the thumb to darkest on the little finger.

Until next time!

Valentine's Day Countdown # 1 - The Anti-Valentine

Hello hello!

The mushy-forwards-spamming-your-whatsapp-and-random-romeos-grossing-you-out-and-coochie-cooing-couples-overpopulating-all-your-local-cafes day is finally here. Yay. Well let's make the most of it!

Random things to do on Valentine's day, the anti-valentine way!

Watch Star Trek. And feel mushy. While you're watching it. Know that you live in a beautiful world.

Feel inspired, play motivational speaker and make a video counselling the younger generation on love and life and on getting a life.

Dress up like one of the characters from a classic and go out and sing random songs, dedicating them to strangers.

Bake a cake and eat it too.

Make a silly movie and watch it too.

Pick that one friend who's just gone through a bad breakup and slap them.

Tell that friend you just slapped that they deserved it for making a bad choice.

Gift that friend a cupcake (if a girl) or a PSP (if a guy) to make up for the slap if it hurt too bad.

Walk up to a young couple and go "you guys look so cute together, may I click a pic? It's for a blog post". Then tell them "hey, I know your parents. And you know what? I'm going to show them these pictures"...and run away.

Adopt a dog. And take good care of him/her. For life.

Go to a classy resto and go in straight to the washroom. Now shout 'bhoooooot bhooot' and run out.

Look at yourself in the mirror, know how lucky you are to have yourself in your life. Now cry tears of joy.

Narrate ghosts stories to little kids in the neighbourhood and freak them out.

Send me flowers and tell me how much you'll love my posts so I can cry tears of joy.

Valentine's Day Countdown # 2 - At the boyfriend's

Hey all,

If you're not doing a dinner or a movie date, or spending the day out together, you probably will have plans to just spend time indoors. You can't obviously dress up like a diva-off-the-red-carpet for him. What you can do, though, is pick one of these looks-

Froufrou Fun!
Colour-block in a vest and a high-waisted froufrou skirt combo. Team it up with flats to tone it down. No accessories needed, just carry an itsy bitsy cutesy sling to go.

Don't own a froufrou? Well, simply wear two or three flowy skirts of different lengths (shorter one over the longer one) on top of one another to make them look like one!

Shirt + Shorts
Pick a slightly oversized shirt, roll up the sleeves to 3/4th and tuck the shirt in. Ankle length socks and oxfords, delicate pieces like tiny studs and a wired ring, et voila!
Cut out tee + Denims
Get one or simply DIY it...takes as little as 5 minutes! Cut the neck of a grey tee into a boat and wear it such that it falls off one shoulder or make little cut-out designs all over the back. Team it up with a neon inner, preferable a haltered one. Opt for a tee that is one or two sizes bigger or one that is really loose and pair it up with skin fit denims or ones in a pencil fit.

Until next time!

Valentine's Day Countdown # 3 - Date's Day Out!

Hey all,

By now almost all of you must have made plans on how you're going to celebrate V-day. For those planning to spend the entire day out with your sweetheart, this post is for you.

The idea of enjoying innumerous activities together sounds exciting, yes! But an entire day could mean need for multiple touch-ups right? Absolutely! But why not make it easy and fun for all you pretty ones?

Prep-work:
Prepare yourself in advance...go in for a facial or a clean up to add a glow. As for your hair, go in for curls (if it gets messy, you don't need to excuse yourself to comb your hair).  For times your hair gets uncontrollable, you can always tie it up into a quick messy bun. Curls add a certain flirty element to any look, so even if you fancy slick straight hair, I'd suggest you try soft curls this Valentine's.

Second skin:
For both, clothes and footwear, make sure to pick something really comfy. I really think a pair like this one (It's by Sionucci, available at bestylish.com) will work well...it's really cute, plus it's got a wedge heel, so it adds height without feeling like your on a painful pair of heels!
Copyright © 2014 Dhaara Thakkar
Touch up!
Just carry your mascara, a coloured gloss and a gel liner, and you're good to go! I'm pretty sure you won't need them, except for the gloss maybe, but be prepared nonetheless.

I suggest you specifically get these-
Maybelline's Volum' Express Hyper Curl Mascara in Waterproof Shade Black is my personal favourite. It just instantly adds volume to the lashes while curling them, (oh! And the curl stays, really!) and it's water-proof!

Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Black, the brush enables ease in application...saves time!

Sling it up!
Carry a sling so it's he who gets all your attention. Let it not be too small so you can fit in your phone, keys, wallet and some touch up tools.

Hope you'll have a fab V-day!

Until next time!

Valentine's Day Countdown # 4 - The Dinner Date

Hey all,

Here's the second one from my Valentine's Day Countdown series. Incase you missed the first, click here.

Today's date pick- The dinner date
Could be by the waves, on a rooftop, by the beach or indoors, you know you'll dress to kill. But what about your hairdo? The safest bet, first, is to decide on that. Since it's a dinner date, it's got to be an evening look- an updo should work like magic!

If you want your face to look thinner and longer, tie your hair low, leaving the bangs loose. Try one of these-

What would go best with this look-
- Danglers...let long earrings be your only accessories. If it's too little for you, maybe a cuff to go, but avoid a neckpiece.

- Highlight your eyes with a slick, winged liner or go smokey-eyed while keeping the lips subtle with a nudish lipcolour and gloss to glam it up a bit.
- Go extreme, either a tube jumpsuit (something in a lighter fabric like chiffon would really look classy!) or a full-sleeved short dress. The idea is, either your arms showing or your legs, not both.

For those with a sculpted face, tie your hair high leaving very little or no hair loose. It'll only enhance your cheek bones and jawline.

What goes with this look-
- Go in for a no-earring look or opt for studs and a statement neckpiece.
- For your eyes, enhance them with just a thin stroke of liner and mascara. Go bold on your lips instead.
- Depending on your body type, choose a dress or a jumpsuit. Avoid anything too flared.

Whatever you put together, let it not be too understated. However, do keep in mind, simpler is classier!

Until next time!
